Understanding the Real Cause of World War II

Human history is a long and usually complex chain of cause and effect. Understanding the actions or events that ultimately gave rise to an empire, led to an economy’s collapsed, or ignited a war can get lost in the search for a quick answer. Connect the dots through time and trace how the death of a popular but rather obscure Danish king in 1863 ultimately led to the outbreak of World War II.

One Man’s Journey through War in the Pacific

Follow Leonard Gordon from boot camp in Oregon to combat in New Guinea and The Philippines as part of the Allies’ relentless drive to defeat the Empire of Japan in World War II. Leonard’s story, based on his memoir “Righteous Might: One Man’s Journey Through War in the Pacific,” is rich with details from the view of the common soldier, sharing stories of everyday activities in camp as well as deadly combat.

Assault on Lone Tree Hill

One of the operational bases General Douglas MacArthur needed in his leap-frog campaign along the north coast of New Guinea was at Maffin Bay and the airfields at Wakde-Sarmi. But the Japanese were entrenched in a heavily forested and cave-riddled coral outcrop that overlooked the bay. Securing what came to be called Lone Tree Hill became a protracted bloody engagement fought between the Japanese 223rd and 224th Infantry Regiments and the US 158th Regimental Combat Team and 6th Infantry Division. But while names like Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima are etched into the American consciousness, Wakde-Sarmi and Lone Tree Hill have been sadly forgotten. Learn why it was so important for the Americans to occupy the Wakde-Sarmi area and what it took to secure it.
